Onion sets developmentMarket situation of onion sets trade has its own specific features relating to accessibility in different seasons and different intensity of demand in the months in the European market (like the seeds of overwintering onions). To protect against various types of fluctuations and to obtain the material in the most competitive price in relation to the quality offered, the optimal course of supply, which guarantees the purchase of selected varieties, quantities and agreed fixed price, a transaction in the following steps (from the viewpoint of the buyer) goes:
- request a quote on some varieties of sets (usually from October to April)
- receive feedback with the calculation of prices
- ordering, payment of 10% deposit, the receipt of invoice for advance and detailed agreement with complete guarantee
- receipt of goods, a VAT invoice (or a fiscal receipt), payment of the balance

There is also no concern about the availability of a certain amount or type of goods ordered. Sets are usually transported by refrigerated vehicles or insulated semitrailers to maintain its quality, while the deadline for receipt of ordered goods shall be agreed with the customer.
There is an option to contract treated onion sets (against diseases and fusarium) and packed in big-bag or smaller bags per: 20kg, 15kg, 10kg, 5kg, 1kg, 0,5kg (standard item is packed in 25kg bags).

Alpha is the tried and tested variety, which even after nearly 20 years continues to improve with ongoing selection, and is again increasing in popularity. Needs some heat treatment but can be planted January onwards. Performs well in Spain also.
A new Alpha hybrid with hopefully all the shortcomings of Alpha overcome! Performance in trials has been outstanding, being at least a week earlier than Alpha. Increased yield and excellent shape vs Alpha.
A cheaper open pollinated version of Vulcan which is a day or two later than Jagro and a little more variable. Good availability for commercial trials to evaluate vs Vulcan.
Nickerson-Zwaan's early to very early variety. High round onion. Excellent yield. Good hardness.
A New Rumba hybrid, harvest up to a week earlier than Jagro. Bulb shape good with thinner necks. Planned as a companion to Helenas.
Stuttgarter has good yellow skin quality, making it an excellent choice together with high yield. The bulbs have a flattened shape, excellent keeping qualities and are slow to bolt. It has a sweet, smooth and very mild taste.
The variety grown for many years. Very popular Bejo Zaden's variety. Slightly flattened bulbs with excellent husk, you can store up to 3 months. Harvest from mid-July. Also recommended for processing.
The most popular maincrop variety in EU for many years. Harvest in August at least 3 weeks earlier than direct drilled varieties. Suitable for planting on heavier land than would be possible for direct drilling.
.Probably the oldest onion variety still grown and still popular although generally in decline. Planting and harvest date as Rumba. Shape can be a bit variable tending to flatness.
Bulbs, very smooth, perfectly spherical with a thin neck, a large size 50/70 mm and 60/80 mm. Designed especially recommended for direct sale to the wholesale market. Scale of light brown color. Suitable for short storage if it is collected in a timely manner. High resistance to Fusarium rot of onions heels.
The best white onion with green onions. Round, hard, with a distinct flavor. Not suitable for long term storage.
Red onion sets
Seed is short and only available for direct drilling. Seed production has been difficult and new hybrids will supersede the present variety once present seed stocks are used up.
Well established Rijnsburger Red. This variety has suffered as a result of two selections. It is an improved Red Baron selection, and cheaper. Improvement has been to reduce variability in shape and increase % single centres.
The standard variety for early production but needs time in store for optimum quality. This variety needs a full heat treatment but does not suffer from the bacterial issues of Rijnsburger types. It should therefore be dried and cured at 28/25°C as per normal practice.
Well established as the best overwinter variety available and increasing in popularity for prepack sales. Needs to be planted as late in October as possible, and even into November especially for the 17/21 grade sets to minimise bolting risk. A reliable performer but 10 days later than SenshyuR.
A new reselection of Senshyu for better globe shaped bulbs. Generally thin skinned, needs to be harvested with 75%+ tops down and still green. Harvest last week June, needs at least 14 days curing. Short storage, sell by 6 weeks from harvest.
A new variety for Autumn planting and harvest date in between Senshyu and Shakespeare with better bolting resistance. Thinner skinned than Shakespeare but anticipated as suitable for prepack. Shorter storage life vs Shakespeare but earlier harvest.
